Mitutoyo 573-191-20 Overviews

The Mitutoyo 573-191-10 ABSOLUTE low force digital caliper uses low measuring force to measure pliable materials such as plastics and rubbers. This caliper has accessible function control buttons, such as Origin-set, Zero-setting, Power On/Off, and Data Output, and uses the metric measuring system. Although identical to dial and vernier calipers in its ability to make precise measurements, the digital caliper’s LCD increases reading reliability.

The 573-191-10 has the ABSOLUTE electrostatic capacitance linear encoder. It weighs 253 g. Main scale length is 314 mm, jaw depth is 40 mm, and beam width is 16 mm. Range is 0 – 180 mm, resolution is 0.01 mm, and accuracy is rated at + or – 0.05 mm. Measuring force is 0.49N to 0.98N. Also included are origin-setting, zero-setting, data output, and power on/off function buttons. A Digital LCD Data Reading Hold function is available with the optional data hold unit (959143), sold separately. An alarm alerts the user to low voltage and counting value composition errors. A thumbwheel permits fast and easy measuring and a thumb screw locks the scale’s position. Response speed is unlimited. The caliper has Statistical Process Control (SPC) data output capability for manufacturing quality control. It outputs data using a serial data interface to a computer or other dedicated recording device using SPC cable with data switch (959149 or 959150, depending on cable length). The SR44 silver oxide cell battery (938882) lasts for approximately 3.5 years of normal use and is recommended to maintain constant voltage levels.

Calipers measure the distance between two opposing sides of an object. They make inside, outside, depth, or step measurements, according to their type. Calipers are commonly used in architecture, metalworking, mechanical engineering, machining, manufacturing, carpentry, and medicine. The simplest calipers have two legs to mark the two points and require a ruler to take the measurement. More complex calipers use two sets of jaws instead of legs and have up to two graduated scales. Vernier, dial, and digital calipers all give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. The vernier caliper has a scale sliding parallel to the main scale for an additional, fractional reading to improve measurement precision. The dial caliper has a circular dial with a pointer on a toothed gear rack replacing the second vernier scale. As with the vernier, this second measurement is added to the reading from the main scale to obtain the result. The dial caliper is used also for measuring size differential between two objects. The digital caliper takes the same sort of differential measurements as the dial caliper by zeroing the display at any point along the slide, with an LCD (replacing the dial) that displays a single, easily read value in both English and metric units. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices.

Mitutoyo manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology equipment, and systems. The company was founded in Tokyo in 1934 and formed Mitutoyo America Corporation in 1963, which is headquartered in Aurora, IL.

Starrett 120JZ-6 Overviews

The Starrett 120JZ-6 dial caliper measures 0 to 6 inches with 0.001” accuracy and has an adjustable jaw for measuring different planes that cannot be reached with a standard caliper. The adjustable 3-1/2” reference jaw can be made either longer or shorter than the sliding jaw. This handy measuring tool allows for reliable and accurate readings with the sharp, black graduations on the no-glare, satin-finished bar, crisp lines on the white dial face, and knife edge contacts for inside and outside measurements.

One full revolution of the dial is equivalent to 0.100”. The jaw depths on this caliper are approximately 1-1/2” for the outside measuring jaws and 5/8″ on the inside measuring jaws. The knife-edge contacts can be used to scribe parallel lines on the workpiece. This caliper can be used with one hand through operating the fine adjustment roll with the thumb. The lock screw locks the dial bezel and holds the sliding jaw in position. The depth rod is integrated into the rack of the caliper, unlike many calipers which offer a detachable depth rod, or none at all. The hardened stainless steel components, including the bar, measuring surfaces, rack, gears, and depth rod, offer corrosion resistance, increased accuracy, and long life. Positive split gear anti-backlash control offers increased accuracy over standard gear configurations. Backlash is the amount of clearance between mated gear teeth in the caliper controls, which prevents the gear teeth from jamming. It is undesirable to have much backlash due to the lack of precision offered by the increased amount of play between gears. Certain gear designs can minimize or eliminate backlash; split gear systems actually split the gear into two gears, each half as thick as the original gear. One of these gears is then fixed to the shaft while the other gear is allowed to turn. The free-turning gear is connected to coil springs that rotate it until all the backlash in the control system has been eliminated. The rack teeth point down to keep foreign matter from clogging the gear operations. This prevents measurement errors where metal chips could interfere with proper caliper operation.

Vernier, dial, and digital calipers give direct and accurate readings and are functionally identical, having a calibrated scale with a fixed jaw, and another jaw with a movable pointer that slides along the scale. Some digital calipers can hold data readings between measurements and send them to data collection devices.

The L. S. Starrett Company was founded in 1880, originally manufacturing bench vises, squares, and other tools. They acquired other companies throughout the years, expanding their services into making precision measurement instruments and tools, such as calipers, micrometers, saw blades, and gauges. Starrett is headquartered in Athol, Massachusetts and has manufacturing facilities in Brazil, the United Kingdom, China, and other locations.

Features

  • Precise dial graduations of 0.001″, with one revolution equivalent to 0.100″
  • Thumb-operated fine adjustment roll allows for one-handed use
  • Lock screw holds the sliding jaw in position, to help ensure consistent measurement
  • Rack teeth point down to keep foreign matter from clogging the gear, to help prevent measurement error

Starrett 1175Z Overviews

Starrett 1175Z Dial Indicator 81-136-1175 Groove Gauge is used for measuring inner diameter (ID) grooves and internal recesses, reads to 0.0005”, has a dial reading of + or – 30 graduations, and a total measurement range of 0.060”. Two sets of interchangeable jaws measure to gauging depths of 1.25” and 2.50”, and three sets of interchangeable contacts are used with 0.375” – 6.00” bore diameters, 0.100” – 0.265” groove depths, and 0.024” – 0.051” groove widths. The moveable gauging contacts have a 1/2” retractable range, are made from hardened steel and have a chrome finish for long life, and flush ends for gauging blind holes. The fixed lower jaw supports the weight of the gauge and the operator’s hands, preventing incorrect gauging pressure and false readings. A fine adjustment screw and lock help provide additional accuracy.

Dial indicators, also called dial gauges, dial calipers, and probe indicators, are precision measuring tools used to measure small linear distances and object sizes. The dial magnifies the measurement for readability by the human eye. They are frequently used in manufacturing, laboratories, and other industrial or mechanical fields, and are suitable anywhere a small measurement must be taken and recorded or transferred, such as checking the variation in tolerance of a workpiece. Dial test indicators are very similar to dial indicators, except that the axis of measurement is perpendicular to the axis of the indicator. Standard dial indicators measure the displacement along the axis of the indicator. Dial indicators can be analog, with a mechanical dial, or electronic, with a digital display.

The L.S. Starrett Company manufactures precision measuring tools, metrology and testing equipment, and saw blade products. The company was founded in 1880 and is headquartered in Athol, MA.
